Week of the Brain
Bo Erik (age 9) and his sister Shennendoah (age 12), created their own website over Christmas break about the brain. (Go to www.NeuroKids.org.) Soon after they had the idea to create a program at their school called "Week of the Brain", which they celebrated, exposing over 500 students to the brain, how it worked, and how to keep it healthy.
One mom of a 5th grade student with ADHD recently called the children's mother in tears thanking her for the kids' efforts. Her son had just come home and at recess told the following story: "Mom, my friends said I'm not different, it's just my brain that's wired different. I feel awesome! Now everybody knows its all brain stuff, not me."
What a wonderful story! She said that no matter how many times they told their son he was wonderful, he didn't believe it until it came from his friends.
While learning about the brain and how to keep it healthy is wonderful, this message is inspiring and empowering. If kids learn this one message, it is worth writing to every superintendent across the U.S. to request that all schools celebrate Week of the Brain: an entire week dedicated to learning about the brain for K-8 schools.
